Position Paper

NURS 332 - The Growing Family

Purpose of Assignment
To examine a controversial or politically or publicly debated women’s health, obstetric or neonatal issue and present both sides equally.

Student Approach to Assignment
For this assignment, I decided to increase my knowledge on the topic of "savior siblings", a child initially created to donate blood, tissue, or the like to a sick sibling. I was originally completely against the idea of the creation and use of a savior sibling, but after reviewing supportive and opposing literature on the topic, I have come to a better understanding that the use of a savior sibling is dependent upon the needs and values of each family considering them. Savior siblings can be a vital component to a family and their respective dynamic.

Reason for Inclusion of Assignment in this Portfolio
Critical Thinking

  • Revises actions and goals based on evidence rather than conjecture

    • Example: Prior to reviewing literature on the topic, I was against the generation of savior siblings as a means to save a sick child. Going along with the opposing argument of this topic, I believed this practice would cause emotional and physical trauma to the child associated with the intention behind their birth, stress and anxiety from transplantation, and the issue of the parents forcing the donor sibling to undergo such procedures. After researching both sides of the topic, it is clear that there are benefits unable to be ignored. From a utilitarian perspective, savior siblings satisfy the wellbeing of the family as a whole. Reasoning to have a child can be motivated by several different reasons. Having another child to save their sick older sibling can be qualified as another viable reason. The savior sibling's genetic health is guaranteed and can allow for feelings of fulfillment in being able to help their sick sibling.

Research

  • Applies research-based knowledge from the arts, humanities, and sciences to complement nursing practice

    • Example: Relating to the arts and humanities, the paper discusses utilitarianism as having a favorable view of savior sibling creation. At its core, utilitarianism focuses on attaining a positive final outcome and utilizes it to justify the required actions creating the said outcome. As the ends justify the means, it is not the nurse's place to hesitate in treating parents that decide to have a child this way. Finally, scientific references create an understanding of the production process. Articles from Clinical Genetics, MedlinePlus, and Colombia Medica, describe different steps of the practice beginning from in-vitro fertilization, to preimplantation genetic testing, and finally fetal implantation into the mother. In nursing, understanding this process allows for enhanced knowledge on the risks associated with this procedure and better anticipate the parents' needs.
